Microsoft VS Google

Microsoft network cannot still go beyond the Google giant in the Internet search market. Its new Bing Internet search engine, which it showed publicly for the first time will still provide search results for any term an online user types into it. But Bing is initially designed to provide a much richer search experience for people looking for information in four categories: shopping, travel, health and local businesses.

The strategy could give Microsoft a shot at peeling away users from rival search engines in some popular search areas that also offer lucrative opportunities for selling related advertising. But even if Microsoft is successful, it still faces the problem that Google and Yahoo could simply duplicate Bing’s features. Search engines have a long history of copying each other’s interface changes.

In recent years, for example, all of them have begun suggesting related search terms and blending more photos and videos into their search results.
“If some particular feature becomes particularly popular, it wouldn’t be terribly difficult for Google to mimic that feature,” says Greg Sterling, an Internet analyst with Sterling Market Intelligence, a research firm.

Bing faces another challenge as well: Microsoft’s own research shows that more than 60% of consumers say they are satisfied with existing Internet search engines. That doesn’t bode well for the company’s efforts to eat into Google’s 64% share of the U.S. search market, which far outstrips Yahoo’s 20% share and Microsoft’s 8%, according to comScore Inc.

Microsoft’s approach of going after the four search categories mirrors attempts others have made to compete with Google by building so-called “vertical” search engines, which specialize in showing results in categories where Google’s results are perceived to be weak.

In general, those properties have failed to gain much traction because most consumers prefer a one-stop shop. At the same time, Yahoo and Google have developed and deployed technology unique to specific search areas, like local businesses and shopping.

Movie Review – Sarvam!

SarvvamSarvam,a kollywood film directed by Vishnuvardhan stars Arya and Trisha, is a story built with a simple idea. The music is played by Yuvan Shankar Raja and the film is produced by Ayngaran International.

The film is about three people whose lives take a drastic turn in a flash. Yes, life can change in a flash, but what is more important is how we deal with the change. There are some who drown themselves into sorrow and self pity while there are others who look at what remains and try to find happiness.

Sarvam shows the clash of wills of two people who deal in different ways to the losses they faced in their life. Karthik is a young successful architect. Tall, handsome and charming, he seems to have everything going for him in life. Then he meets Sandhya, a girl who sets violins playing in his heart. He decides that she is the girl for him. But, deciding is the easy part, wooing her is not as easy as he imagined. She is not just a beautiful girl who will fall easily to the charms of a young man. She is a doctor in one of the city’s top hospitals and Karthik becomes a regular visitor, making all kinds of efforts to woo his love. You can sense the relationship growing. Eventually, it is a romance that never was destined to be. Read more..

‘Ayan’ Review!

ayan picAyan, starred by surya and Tamannah, directed by KV Anand and music by Harris jeyaraj is produced by mamoth AVM productions. Ayan’s screenplay does the trick and it is brilliantly choreographed stunts and car chase sequences, cleverly planted twists at every nook and corner of the plot and some good music.

Ayan proves to be an absolute time pass fare. For a little more than two hours, it would be an offense to call Ayan just another commercial potboiler. Director K V Anand’s research is evident in the tightly packed screenplay and do not miss out the potshots he takes at a few directors in the name of plagiarism.

Slipping logic into your wallet would be a good idea before entering the halls, but it’s unlikely that you would regret doing so. And it is highly doubtful that you would have any time to think about it during the course of the movie. Well, pardon the second half for dragging a wee bit though.

The movie starts off with Surya giving a little tongue-lash for Corporate Houses for treating their employees as mushrooms. A minute later, we realize that he is the trustworthy ally of Prabhu, whose business thrives on illegal diamond trafficking from Africa. With clever strategies and an M Sc degree, Suriya flies across the globe to transport consignments sneaking in and out of the airport scanners in style. Read more…

Actor Prakashraj to Play LTTE Chief?

prakashrajMultilingual actor Prakash Raj says he has been offered the role of LTTE chief Vellupillai Prabhakaran in a Tamil film and that he will be doing it.“I would like to perform the role according to the dictates of the script and requirement of the director. I will not do any homework or prepare for this role in details as I think spontaneity will provide better results than anything,” said the actor at an interactive session.

“Acting career is like a journey to me. Acting has been a process of learning to me. You learn many things while interacting with many people. I think any actor will gain confidence and maturity with experience. Working with different directors and the best of the actors make you determined to give the best shot,” he said. Prakash Raj also worked with Bollywood megastar Amithabh Bachchan in two Hindi films – “Khakee” and “Zamanat“ and is all praise for him.

“He is truly a legend. He is extremely patient. He used to call me ‘Kalaakar’ and I enjoyed working with him. Despite his stature, he doesn’t question the decision of a director. I saw him agreeing for the eighth take for director Raj Kumar Santhoshi while shooting for ‘Khakee‘. I was really impressed with his professionalism,” he said.

His film “Mozhi“ won many awards and was also a box office success. “I have made ten Tamil films so far. I would like to take up projects which have a good story. I want to encourage younger talents who want to prove their mettle with their stronger scripts with novelty elements. I’m happy that young directors like Priya, Guhan and Radha Mohan are established names today,” said Prakash Raj.

Can Chennai win Deccan?

chennai-super-kingsDeccan Chargers will be looking to get back to wining ways against last year’s runners-up Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. For Super Kings it is just the opposite. They are on a two-match winning streak and will be hoping to make a hat-trick of wins, which was done by Deccan Chargers early on in the league.

This time under a new captain in Adam Gilchrist, Deccan Chargers have forced everyone to stand up and take notice of their performance. Their batting has looked solid with Gilchrist leading the charge. Youngsters like Rohit Sharma and Azhar Bilakhia have also come out with good innings.

The bowlers also have done well, especially fast bowlers Rudra Pratap Singh and Fidel Edwards. Rudra Pratap is the second highest wicket-taker in the IPL while Edwards has checked the run flow. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha has been one of the most successful spinner in the second IPL and was chief architect in Chargers’ win over Mumbai Indians.

Tax Changes for Overseas Firms

obama-newAmerican President Barack Obama proposed changing provisions in the tax code that he says encourage U.S. companies to move jobs overseas, as part of a broader package aimed at saving $210 billion over 10 years.

Obama will seek to follow through on a campaign promise to change the tax treatment of American firms with overseas operations. That portion of his plan — opposed by such firms as Pfizer Inc and Oracle Corp — would raise more than $100 billion in revenue over the next decade.

In an echo of a line he used often on the campaign trail last year, Obama vowed in a February address to the U.S. Congress to make the tax code more fair by “finally ending the tax breaks for corporations that ship our jobs overseas.”

Currently, U.S. firms are allowed to defer paying taxes on profits earned overseas if they plow those profits back into their foreign subsidiaries. An array of firms signed onto a letter to congressional leaders in March opposing changes to the so-called deferral provision, saying they would make U.S. businesses less competitive.
